Kevin, a seasoned and highly respected electronics engineer, was born in Killybegs, County Donegal, Ireland. He spent many of his early years in England where he graduated with an electronic engineering degree from Liverpool University. After a few years working in England he decided to return to Ireland and, in 1978, he was recruited by Hewlett Packard to represent them in the electronic test and measurement sales side of their business in a country that was showing the first signs of notable expansion in electronic design and manufacturing.
His time at HP covered “dc to light” technologies and, being the premier engineering company of its time, he built and gained significant experience at the leading edge of the electronics industry. The company recognised his contribution by the many awards given to him in addition to the number of promotions he received.
The training he received within HP included both technical and the “HP Way” and this was to provide a solid background to his working life. The “Bill and Dave” way of doing business was well respected, with attention to detail, ethical standards and respect for the individual being key elements to the ethos.
When Agilent Technologies was formed as a spin-off from HP in 1998, Kevin was asked to become the Country General Manager for Agilent Technologies Ireland and was elected as Managing Director a year later. Despite these changes in responsibility, Kevin never lost touch with the customer and ensured that a notable proportion of his time was spent listening to customers’ needs and feedback. The customer-first company-second mentality again was paramount in Kevin leading Agilent Ireland through the difficult years of the global downturn.
In 2005, Kevin decided to take early retirement to enable him to enjoy more time travelling with his wife Cecelia and also more opportunity to engage in his main hobby, astronomy, from his back garden observatory. This was not to last long however as he was headhunted by one of his previous staff who had left Agilent to set up his own business and so Kevin was persuaded to join T5 Process Solutions as Director and Lead Technologist.
T5’s objective was to provide a Remote Integrated Management System (RIMS), initially being developed to monitor thermal ancillary services provided by chillers in the semiconductor industry. Kevin’s technical background, leadership skills, natural ability to listen to the needs of the customer, accurately define these needs and involve the customer completely in the development of any concept, resulted in a successful implementation of the goals.
The initial product, TRIMS, is deployed using its own network – offering intelligent communications capabilities which permit the online monitoring of chillers. Unlike existing fault detection systems, T5’s technology identifies fault patterns before the actual fault occurs. This therefore provides for predictive maintenance of chillers and eliminates the need for unscheduled downtime associated with the occurrence of a fault.
The system consists of a Multi-Variant Adaptor (MVA) that takes the fingerprint of a chiller every few seconds, networking this data in an easy to use GUI.
Kevin is an accomplished Engineer, with both technical and people management skills and a true asset to the company.
